A Parent’s Guide to the Importance of Accreditation
Silver State Charter Schools is a Free, Public, on campus and on-line school using our unique Hybrid model of distance education course work combined with students attending our Carson City campus on selected days to work with their teachers. We developed the Hybrid model for our online schools in Nevada to allow the teachers to focus on the student by reducing their daily clerical load and giving parents real time password access to their students’ progress. Alternately, while not encouraged, students may choose to enroll and work on-line completely from home, not attending on-campus classes, exactly like if you were attending another Nevada online school. Students are then assisted by our Nevada certified teachers by phone or email.
All our teachers are certified in their teaching subjects and are available full time at our campus or on phone or email from 9 to 3:00 Monday through Thursday.
High school students, grades 9-12, attend classes to meet with their teachers and do class work on-line. This format for online schools in Nevada allows students to work with their teachers one-on-one or come in on other days to get individualized help. Students are also encouraged to phone or contact their teachers using instant messaging during the day and into the early evening whenever they need help.
Our 85,000 square foot campus has large computer classroom labs and other classrooms using state-of-the-art computer presentation methods to allow students to work online or attend presentations by their teachers. We utilize a special high-tech lab for Digital Photography, Flash Animation, Game Design and Web Design. Additionally, the school has individual cubicles where students may use computers and work uninterrupted, yet they are able to seek their teacher’s help whenever needed.
Our new building allows us to add a large chemistry, physics, and robotics labs. Also, we have an exciting new Performing Arts Center which seats almost 700 people; supplementing our fantastic Drama Department.
Students register for the required six credits each school year (4 if a senior); however, they are assigned and complete only three credits every 18 weeks which is a normal semester. This enables students to concentrate on three subjects at a time and get the help they need. This system also allows the school not to schedule several difficult courses at the same time.
Our new state-of-the-art facility and Performing Arts Center is located at the South end of Carson City, Nevada at the Fairview Exit off Hwy 395 and is served by bus system (DART and PRIDE). The location was selected to enable students from Douglas, Story, Lyon, Washoe and other surrounding counties to attend. Students from outlying counties are encouraged to enroll as our unique distance education format is designed to serve them easily.
We provide free School Bus service to Washoe, Douglas and Lyon Counties along with limited local Carson City routes. Please click on our "Bus Routes" tab to see the stops and times or contact the school to ask us about adding additional stops.
Our course-work is approved by the Nevada Department of Education and is updated frequently as new, exciting courses become available. All our teachers are experienced, Nevada certified, Highly Qualified teachers under the No-Child-Left-Behind-Act. Teachers are selected and trained to help students using this new educational format.
We want our Nevada online school students to be successful in all their goals and our teachers want to be part of that success. Parents are expected to monitor their child’s progress as all grades and assignments are posted on-line and are password protected.
We hope this gives you an overview about Silver State Charter Schools. We ask you to call or come by and meet our staff and tour our beautiful new facility to determine if this is the right choice to help your child be successful. We believe it is.
Charter schools are independent public schools designed and operated by parents, educators, community leaders, education entrepreneurs and others with a contract, or charter, from a public agency, such as a local or state education agency or an institution of higher education. Charter schools are operated free-of-charge to parents and are open to all students. These schools provide parents enhanced educational choices within the public school system. Exempt from many statutory and regulatory requirements, charter schools receive increased flexibility in exchange for increased accountability for improving academic achievement. The first U.S. public charter school opened in 1992. Today, nearly 4,000 charter schools serve more than one million students in 40 states and Washington, D.C.
