Biology

Term 1 Week 1 / August 22- August 26

General Announcements: Welcome back everyone!  I am looking forward to a good year as the school grows and our capacity to transmit curriculum improves.

The first few lessons in Module One are straight forward and all of you should make “As.” Be aware of the fact that I will also accept hard copies of assignments unless the instructions specifically call for an email transmission. The pace chart found in the course has been modified. Recall that you are on the accelerated schedule and will finish this one year course in one semester or term. There are approximately 70 lessons, not including additional assignments I will give you, therefore it is important that you work consistently each week and complete approximately 4 assignments per week. You will notice that some assignments have been deleted, however others will be added later to the course in module eight which is entitled evolution. Also, it will not be necessary for you to complete most Honors assignments so just ignore that content except Lesson 7.08. Finally, notice that there are references in the pace chart to In House Lessons, these lessons will be given on Wednesday as most of you are attending on that day. In House Lessons are intended to help you understand the fundamentals or to extend the concepts of the course. Please remember to bring your notebooks as you may have to take notes. Also, you may receive additional assignments at this time. Should you attend on a day other than Wed. you will have to make up these labs or lessons on the day you regularly attend.

What is this weird thing?                              What instrument is being used?

Note: Don’t forget to put your name on all assignments!

A word about midterms and finals: To insure that you are making adequate progress you will take an offline paper and pencil midterm and final here at the school. The online test can be taken for practice but will not be graded. Preparation is essential! As some of you will be working at different paces I understand that you may not be prepared on the day the midterm or final is scheduled, however you will be expected to take either test within a week of its scheduled date.

Accelerated Pace :  This is a guide to help you complete the Biology course in one semester (18 weeks).  There are 15 weeks of work listed.  There are 3 weeks of vacation time built into the course.  You and your parents will need to decide when vacation time will be taken.  Realize if you do not maintain your pace you may not be able to utilize your vacation time.

You need to use a calendar to place the dates of each Monday on your pace chart.  Make 2 copies: one for yourself, and one for your parent.  Keep a signed copy in your notebook.  Send your instructor an electronic copy. Typed names for the signature will be acceptable on the electronic copy.

Term 1 Week 1 / August 24 to August 26

General Announcements:  Welcome back to another year at SSHS. Hope all of you had a great summer. Module number one is fairly straight forward and should be relatively easy. Make sure that you know how to submit assignments thru the dropbox. Remember to complete the Student/Teacher/Parent Contract Form before the end of next week and present it with your notebook for a 20 pt. bonus. In Module two you will run across a lesson that requires you to visit a natural body of water and photograph it. Email the photographs to me as an attachment along with the rest of the assignment. Remember I will accept hardcopies of assignments if you have some technical problem. If for some reason you cannot visit a natural body of water like Lake Tahoe or Washoe Lake then let me know and I will provide an alternative essay for completion of the assignment. With the exception of three assignments almost all of the Honors assignments have been eliminated. This produces a course with about 79 assignments not including midterms, quizzes, or other assignments (just a few-don’t sweat this) I may give you. Therefore, you must do about 4-5 assignments per week to keep up. Some of these assignments may take you several hours (research) but most will take just 20-40 min. Look at the Pace Chart below. Please pay special attention to the In House Lessons. In House Lessons are the lessons I provide when you attend on your scheduled day. Bring your notebook each day that you attend so that you can take notes or participate in other activities.

General Announcements:   Below you will find the modified Pace Chart that we will use in the course. Due to the fact that there is an equal mix of students from different grade levels that attend on different days I have decided to limit the number of In House lessons for this course. Note however, that a few have been included as well as some honors assignments so please bring your notebooks to school when you come. Tip: As you bring up web pages and do assignments record notes in your notebook. Focus on the main ideas and create an outline or brainstorm map of what you have learned when you are done, this will increase retention.
